From star stuff to a pumpkin

Carl Sagan told the world that all living things are made up of star stuff.

If we were able to tag* the particles four billion years before they reached earth, would be be able to discover the path a carbon atom took before it became part of my pumpkin in 2009?  What other homes has this carbon atom had in past four billion years?  And, after my pumpkin decomposes, where will the carbon atom go?
